Sony Intros 17.7 Megapixel CMOS Sensor

After introducing the world s first 16.41MP CMOS sensor for mobile phones last year, Sony has raised the bar now to 17.7MP, according to a report. Along with a higher resolution, this Exmor sensor is the first from Sony to deliver a breakneck bandwidth of 34.8Gbps, which is about five times faster than the last iteration of the CMOS sensor. Images now take up to 75 percent less time to prepare, thanks to the capability of processing several pixels parallel input. Videos can be recorded at up to 120fps at full resolution, depending on the phone s processing power. This sensor employs a special design to prevent the high speed from draining more battery. Sony plans to use this sensor in mobile phones and also in point-and-shoot Cybershot cameras.
