The upcoming installment to the brutal and unforgiving Ninja Gaiden series will feature a multiplayer mode, said Project lead Yosuke Hayashi in the April issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine. Hayashi offered no details on the multiplayer mode, other than saying that it will be complex. Unlike the previous games, Ninja Gaiden 3 will release simultaneously for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. There have been rumors about purported Move support, but Hayashi declined to comment on the issue, instead stating that the details are closely guarded.
The Ninja Gaiden games are known for their punishing level of difficulty, but Ninja Gaiden 3 will buck the trend by making the game more accessible to novices. I can potentially see a lot of old schoolers being annoyed, by what they'd term as Team Ninja selling out, but Hayashi explains that won't be the case. We know that many fans feel good about the difficulty level, but we are taking a slightly different approach. It s not that the game s going to be easier - nothing like that. It s just that we are trying to make a whole game, a more exciting game that can be enjoyed by anyone. But at the same time, hardcore gamers will be able to feel and appreciate what the series is about.
How Hayashi intends to achieve that balance without offending the masocore sensibilities of the hardcore Ninja Gaiden fan is beyond us.
