Acer Aspire 5542G is an inexpensive notebook based on AMD`s Tigris platform. With a dual-core CPU and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650, we were a little surprised that Acer is selling it at this price.
The notebook sports Acer`s typical glossy blue lid and a gray-black combination on the keyboard. The notebook looks pretty decent with its bevelled edges. The build quality is good. Its 15.6in display has a maximum resolution of 1366×768 pixels. The reflective coating of the 5542G leads to disturbing reflections during outdoor sessions. Though Acer`s Aspire 5542G features a dedicated graphics card and dual-core CPU, it consumes very less power.
The keypad felt comfortable during long sessions of typing. The keypad however has moved a little further to the left as usual.
The 5542G offers 4 USB ports, but has no firewire e-SATA ports. To connect external monitors, VGA and HDMI options are available. AMD Markets the 5542G as a part of the Vision campaign. It bears the sticker Vision Premium and is thus a mid-range product. Made with the 45nm processor , the chip runs at 2GHZ and has only 1MB of L2 cache.
The preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium is the 64-bit version. There is 4GB memory with 500GB storage. Graphic duties are handled by ATI Mobility HD5650, which features 1GB of DDR3 video memory.
The notebook scored 3832 in 3DMark06 benchmark test. This score is decent enough forr casual, older or less demanding games. Aspire 5542G weighs about 2.6kg and equipped with 4400mAh battery and lasts upto two and an half hours while surfing the net.
Overall, Aspire 5542G is a value for money notebook. The performance and configuration was a weaker that the others that we have reviewed. The notebook cannot be termed as a true gaming device. However, it is a good option, considering the price, as an entry level, basic notebook for gamers.
