Hackers prone to Android ?

Security software maker Trend Micro Inc. says, Google’s mobile operating system Android is more susceptible to attacks as compared to Apple’s iPhone platform.“Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code,” Steve Chang, chairman of Trend Micro, the world’s largest provider of security software for corporate servers, said in an interview in Taipei yesterday. “We have to give credit to Apple, because they are very careful about it. It’s impossible for certain types of viruses” to operate on the iPhone, he said.

As android is open source software so its source code can be used by anyone to develop apps for it.Hackers can directly write a malicious code using its free and open architecture.Whereas in iOS the developer needs an approval from apple’s online store before being a part of App Store. We trust developers to use our device information before downloading an app or content, therefore Google has taken steps to inform users to be aware of developers before putting a complete trust on an application.
As Verizon Wireless has announced to start selling iPhones handsets next month.Earlier 2 million android based handsets will be repaired and will be reused.Smartphones are tomorrow’s PCs and will also need to spend more on antivirus software, they will be adopted by enterprise and there will be significant data loss. The Trend Micro released a mobile security for android and this software will block viruses, malicious programs and unwanted calls. The application costs around $3.99 and this will generate revenue from more than 250 million phones worldwide, which will be running on android by 2014.

“Apple has a sandbox concept that isolates the platform, which prevents certain viruses that want to replicate themselves or decompose and recompose to avoid virus scanners,” Chang said.Apple iOS cannot be assumed fully immune from virus attacks, these can be attacked by compromising the security by the user, the user can grant permission to access to certain personalized content, which later can be used against him. The company is also offering an antivirus for Apple iOS.

Let us look back into the history we have seen, that Microsoft windows was the operating system which was used by most of the people in the world, though it is paid OS, but still hackers developed viruses for it, whereas Linux is free and open source. But since market share was very low so hackers were not attracted towards it. Now in the case of android it is free, open source as well as popular, so it becomes an obvious choice for hackers, but I still feel we haven’t learn lessons from history, if we would have analyzed it earlier, then toady the virus problem could have been solved.
